New Year and Newest Content Added

So, I'm gearing up for (and have been very busy preparing for) the American Library Association Mid-Winter Conference this week ... and for the final discussions on the Odyssey Award's (secret) final nominations list!  So excited!

While I haven't posted, I have been adding content to the "Youth Services Programs and Resources" area.  For example, recently added a Counting program for 2s and 3s and a Clocks and Counting program for 4s and 5s.  There is a Moon and Stars program for 2-5 Music and Movement program.  You'll see the corresponding public bibliographies on Worldcat.

The Human Body app allowed a child to drag something smelly to the nose.  If it was a food item, the child could see the mouth salivate.  I ended up doing this at the end of the program, since I was having technical difficulties during the program (with the new iOS).

The "smell" jars were small plastic, cylindrical containers from Big Lots.  I had wanted to mash banana in one, have a cinnamon stick in another, a green pepper in the third, and a slice of orange in the fourth.  I ended up putting small, solid perfume samples in them and covered with foil so one couldn't see what was inside.  I poked holes in the top of the foil.

At the moment, we are having a very mild winter in Ohio -- rain and grass vs. snow and snow ... and so,
to escape a seasonal themed-snafu, I'll be doing a program on Dinosaurs this month!  (There's also a Dinosaur exhibit going on in a neighboring county...)

Gotta Move: Noises in the Night

For summer, we grouped the babies, toddlers, and preschoolers into this multi-age, early literacy program. 

We asked the babies to sit in the front, and during the program, provided modified movements for caregivers to do for the babies.  For example, for Wee Willie Winkie, we encouraged the parents to move the babies' feet and lift and lower them on "upstairs" and "downstairs."

I introduced the program by saying, "Let's have fun, be active, and get ready to read!"

I used an iPad to project a sun, a sunset, and a moon scene on a screen (via a VGA adapter and VGA cable) as we repeated Wee Willie Winkie and changed the time on a toy clock from 8 to 9 to 10 o'clock. 

We used puppets/props along with physical/animal motions during Little Owl's Night.

I ended up using the cricket vs. grasshopper activity as my "waiting activity" -- waiting for everyone to come in and get settled before actually starting the program.

For an after storytime activity/extension, I will place those plastic capsules that have an animal shaped sponge inside into plastic water bottles with warm water (lid screwed on) -- one per bottle and one bottle per child.
